One of the keys to high organizational performance is managers being able to distinguish between leadership and management practices, so that they can then establish
the discipline and skill to execute the appropriate practice at the appropriate time. The Leadership Lab®, or LLAB, is a small group session that maximizes learning
of these principles by including client managers in program facilitation. It has been said that we teach what we need to learn. The LLAB™ provides managers of
all levels the opportunity to refine their communication and influencing skills by assuming a facilitator role in structured sessions with reporting managers in their
organization.
Leadership is a choice managers make. There is no right or wrong for each individual, just a choice. An organization’s leadership is responsible for setting
the bar and assuring there is a sufficient pipeline of current and future leadership talent to realize the organization’s purpose and potential for excellence.
Course objectives include:
- Develop working definitions of leadership and management practices that will support development in the client organization
- Coach leaders in facilitating the program
- Concentrate on 3-4 key topic areas chosen by the client organization (see below for possible topics)
- Create a context for maximized learning through shared risk and safety
- Build leadership bench strength
- Provide managers with the opportunity to take the initiative for his/her own development
One of our primary goals in the LLAB is creating a safe environment that gives permission for everyone in the session to learn, be a little awkward, perhaps not get
it right the first time. Real and lasting learning requires taking some risk. Let’s face it, when people advance in their career they want to look like they
know what they are doing and are motivated to get things done. In fact, these abilities and a track record of results tend to propel managers into promotions and increased
responsibility regardless of their readiness. The LLAB explores these challenges and provides opportunities for personal explorations of what it takes to move through
the progression of doing and managing to leading.
Here are definitions for these critical capability areas:
- Doing – Executing on tasks, getting things done (personal productivity, required technical/technology skills, life balance, self-motivation, etc.)
- Managing – Working with and through others to accomplish organizational tactics, goals, and deadlines (systematic problem solving, performance management,
and continuous improvement, etc.)
- Leading – The ability to inspire or influence the behavior of individuals or groups toward the achievement of strategies and related goals (vision that others
embrace, culture development, soft skills, key results)
The LLAB model is highly interactive, ideally with 80% participant interaction and 20% content delivery. Elements that contribute to an ideal design include:
- 1.5 to 2 days off-site with a group dinner (overnight stay preferred), repeated twice a year.
- The LLAB is kicked off by the senior leader (2 levels up from participants), who conducts an inquiry/discussion into current opportunities and organizational issues
(open forum). This leader participates and stays for most of the LLAB to get to know the participants.
- 3-4 key focus topics to provide ample opportunity for exploration, simulations, and learning (topics could include: one-on-one coaching, facilitation skills for
team meetings, employee retention and recognition practices, vision and unique team purpose development, motivation and empowerment exercises, communication and
listening skills, delegation and time management).
- 12 to 15 participants to assure 100% participation in breakout sessions and full group discussion.
- 2 manager facilitators (1 level up from participants) for each topic (facilitators can rotate to a second topic).
- 1 external coach to provide content development assistance, LLAB structure, facilitator feedback and coaching during the sessions as well as on-line expertise
and objectivity for best practices.
